Birding in Ecuador’s Chocó-Andean region is considered one of the greatest wildlife experiences in South America.
Located along the western slopes of the Andes, this biodiversity hotspot combines humid Chocó rainforest, Andean cloud forest, and high-elevation páramo habitats within a remarkably short distance.
Our 7-day Chocó-Andean birding tour explores the best birding locations near Quito and Mindo, including Paz de las Aves, Mashpi Road, Silanche, and Antisana Ecological Reserve. This itinerary targets many of Ecuador’s most iconic species, from Giant Antpittas and Toucan Barbets to spectacular hummingbirds and the majestic Andean Condor.

Day 1 – Arrival and Birding at Zuro Loma Reserve
Our tour begins on the western slopes of the Andes at Zuro Loma Reserve, a beautiful high-elevation cloud forest reserve just outside Quito.
This reserve protects a humid montane forest dominated by moss-covered trees, orchids, and bromeliads. The cool mountain climate and abundant flowering plants create ideal conditions for hummingbirds and Andean forest species.
Birding here focuses on forest edges, hummingbird gardens, and short trails that often host active mixed flocks.

Day 2 – Silanche Bird Sanctuary and Milpe Reserve
Today, we descend into the lowland and foothill forests of the Chocó bioregion.
Our morning is spent at Silanche Bird Sanctuary, a reserve famous for its productive fruit feeders and canopy observation tower. These feeders attract a colorful array of frugivorous birds, providing excellent photographic opportunities.
Typical species include:
Pale-mandibled Aracari
Scarlet-breasted Dacnis
Blue-whiskered Tanager
White-shouldered Tanager
In the afternoon, we visit Milpe Bird Sanctuary, a foothill reserve surrounded by humid Chocó forest. Milpe Bird Sanctuary, at 1100 meters altitude, is a birders’ paradise with many Chocó endemic specialties and well-kept trails to look for Club-Winged and Golden Manakin, as well as the elusive and endangered Umbrella Bird.
Birds of particular interest at today’s hotspots include:
Choco Trogon, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, White-whiskered Puffbird, Black-crowned Antshrike, Scarlet-breasted Dacnis, Club-winged Manakin, Green Thorntail, White Whiskered Hermit, Green-Crowned Brilliant, Green-Crowned Woodnymph.
The forest here is rich in epiphytes and flowering plants, making it especially productive for hummingbirds and mixed feeding flocks.

Day 3 – Paz de las Aves Reserve and Cock-of-the-Rock Lek
Today, we visit one of the most famous birding sites in South America: Paz de las Aves Reserve.
This mid-elevation cloud forest reserve is world-renowned for its opportunities to observe normally elusive antpittas at close range
This reserve is famous for its feeders attracting up to 5 species of Antpittas: Giant Antpitta, Moustached Antpitta, Yellow-breasted Antpitta, Chestnut-crowned Antpitta, Ochre-breasted Antpitta, and other jewels such as Collared Aracari, Plate-billed Mountain Toucan, Chocó Toucan, Yellow-throated Toucan, and Crimson-rumped Toucanet.
Tanagers include Beryl-spangled, Golden-hooded, Flame-faced, Black-chinned, Metallic-green, Blue-capped, Blue-gray, and many more!
Later in the day, we visit a nearby lek of the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-rock, where males gather to perform their dramatic courtship displays.
Another highly sought-after species often seen in this region is the striking Toucan Barbet, a colorful Chocó endemic.

Day 4 – Mashpi Road and Amagusa Reserve
Mashpi Amagusa is a private reserve and eco-lodge located in the Choco-Andino Biosphere. It protects cloud forests on the foothills leading up the West Slope of the Ecuadorian Andes, an area under constant threat from agriculture, mining, and logging.
The road descends through pristine cloud forest and foothill habitats, allowing birders to experience a dramatic elevational gradient within a relatively short distance.
These forests support an extraordinary diversity of birds, including Indigo Flowerpiercer, Golden-collared Honeycreeper, Black Solitaire, Orange-breasted Fruiteater, Lyre-tailed Nightjar, White-tipped Sicklebill, Choco Vireo, Choco Parakeet, Glistening-green Tanager, Black-chinned Mountain-Tanager, Black-striped Sparrow, Flame-faced Tanager, Velvet-purple Coronet, Violet-tailed Sylph, Booted Racket-tail, and Toucan Barbet.
Later, we continue to the Amagusa Reserve, where feeders and forest edges offer excellent bird-photography opportunities.

Day 5 – Santa Rosa Reserve and Mindo Birding Trails
Besides the numerous hummingbird species, this birding Sanctuary offers close encounters with many other interesting species. Here, you can feed hummingbirds directly from your hand on a large platform. In the early afternoon, walk the well-kept trail through a bamboo forest filled with orchids that grow in the area.
Birds of particular interest include: Plate-billed Mountain-Toucan, Blue-capped Tanager, Hoary Puffleg, Crested Guan, Rose-faced Parrot, Bat Falcon, Sunbittern, White-throated Crake, Red-headed Barbet, Ringed Kingfisher, Black-faced Dacnis, Green Thorntail, Crowned Woodnymph.

Day 6 – Sachatamia Reserve and Balcón Tumpiki
Today, we explore Sachatamia Reserve, a beautiful cloud-forest lodge surrounded by mature forest and known for its excellent bird photography hides.
Feeders attract a variety of hummingbirds and tanagers, while forest trails provide opportunities for species such as:

Rufous Motmot
Squirrel Cuckoo
Later, we visit Balcón Tumpiki, a scenic viewpoint overlooking the Mindo valley.

Day 7 – Antisana Ecological Reserve
Our final day takes us high into the Andes to explore Antisana Ecological Reserve.
This spectacular protected area features vast páramo ecosystems, characterized by open grasslands, wetlands, and volcanic landscapes.
The reserve offers one of the best chances to observe the majestic Andean Condor soaring along the mountain ridges.
